Welcome to the GBP Blog

This is the Blog associated with our main website TheGreenBicycleProject.org

The GBP has merged with Damn Good Bikes LLC. Please visit the new blog for more recent updates.

We are the GBP. Our mission is to keep bikes on the road and thus keep cars off. We call this “Bikecycling”; that’s recycling, but for bikes. The concept is simple. Take a bike that’s no longer wanted, broken, or even bound for a landfill and apply a bit of knowhow and a lot of elbow grease and you get a bike that can last someone for years. These bikecycled bikes are sold at a price that covers only our costs in repairing them so as to provide bicycles at the lowest cost possible. All of our bikes are repaired and tuned by a mechanic so that from the moment you pick them up they are ready to hit the road. Take a look below for our current project bikes and completed rides.

Location:
We are located in the US Storage facility at Capital Circle NE and Mahan Rd. While have moved into our new store, we are in the same complex. To get there follow the road through the complex, around the 90 degree bend and make the first left (at the tree). We'll be the first store front on your right. Sound complex? The best way to find us is to follow the bikes!

Buying our bikes:
Please visit our main website at thegreenbicycleproject.org for information about buying our bikes. You may also email us at Thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com.

Distractions for work... I mean home

By using my computer skills and work time productively I have stumbled across a sweet DIY for your bike. No thanks necessary, all I ask is a bite of your sandwich.

The Spirit of Green

If only the US was more like Europe. Anyone want to go halfsies on a hostel in Brussels?

New Website

TheGreenBicycleProject.org is up and running! Change your browser links, update your facebook, and cross out the old address on that bathroom stall cuz we're moving over there. From this point on, this webpage will be a blog about the shop and bike issues. At some point in the future, this will be integrated into the shop webpage and we will take down this blog.

When visiting the new site, please excuse our mess. Our new website is still under construction. However, the online listings of our current bikes are up and ready. Full descriptions and a picture are included. We're still working out the kinks in actually buying bikes online but that feature will be ready soon.

For the time being, enjoy all the work that Bryan at Graphix has put in to make our web home awesome.

GRAND OPENING!

That's right, it's GRAND OPENING time! The GBP is all moved into our new space and it's wondrous. In fact, we're so happy about it we're bring back our free tuneup day! All bikes brought into the store will receive our standard tuneup FOR FREE! We're also extending the march promotion of 6 months of free tuneups to any bike purchased from the new store.

Our new shop is in the same complex as we were before. To get there, after you enter Storage Advantage (They changed the name again) follow the road past the old shop and around the bend. The shop will be on the left about 1/2 way down. Parking and the main entrance are in the back. As usual, follow the bikes!

We will open the doors this Saturday at noon. Hope to see you all there!

Sneek peek

A quick midweek update on some exciting stuff at the GBP. First, we just got in a shipment of commonly requested replacement parts. All these are brand spanking new and all of them are priced at or below $15!

Rear racks for your touring/hybrid bike ($15)
Tires for your road bike ($12)
Tubes for your road bike ($5)

We also have some very nice used parts and accessories such as mini pumps, seat bags, and repair kits. These sell from $2-$10.

Second, the GBP will be rolling out some new features with the new shop. We will be adding a "Lost Bike" bulletin board to both the new website and in store. If you've had your bike stolen or just can't find it (I suggest GPS) feel free to post in either place.

Finally, we are in the process of designing a new GBP shirt. If you are artistically minded or just bored, give it a go. Maybe you just might win! The prize is a new mountain bike or a $50 credit. Official contest details will we posted here, on the new website, and in the shop.

What now?

So if you came by the shop between 2 and 4:30 thank you. We managed to wipe out the entire inventory of repaired bikes and even a few of the not so repaired ones. If you showed up after 4:30 I apologize. We were out of bikes and I was feeling very dizzy (the whole not eating all day and being on my feet since 7am might have done it) so I went home for dinner.

In other news, the new shop is all set and all we have to do is move. We will be doing that next week and thus won't be open for normal business (sorry). We will of course be taking donations and filling special orders as necessary. Oh, and if you're worried you won't be able to find us, don't. We're just moving around the corner in the same complex. As usual, FOLLOW THE BIKES!

There has also been some talk about new bikes. We do have three new bikes coming into the shop. The first is a Mongoose BMX bike w/ pegs. Someday I'll find a market for these and BOOM, no more BMX in stock. However, at the moment we now have 5 BMX bikes in the shop. The second bike is a BEAUTIFUL purple beach cruiser. I know you girls have been looking for them, and I managed to get an amazing one. Finally, I will be bringing in my own personal bike to donate. This bike is a Mongoose dual shock, all aluminum bike. It's not a walmart mongoose but a bike store bike that I rebuilt from the frame up. I haven't set prices on these bikes yet, but I will take orders.

Finally, the GBP will be moving to a new webpage to go along with the new store. I'll post the link as soon as I have it. The new site will include much more detailed pages and a more up to date list of our bikes. There's even some talk about having it accept online payments (but I still refuse to ship). As part of having a new site, all traffic from this site will be redirected as soon as the new site up up and running.

PS: If you stopped by the shop today and I promised to call or email you, my phone has died (actually, I killed it) and your contact info with it. Can you please email me at the address listed above so we can contiune our conversation?

Special Purchase

If you haven't figured it out yet, the last post was an April Fools joke. Those bikes do exist, but you can only get one if you engineer one yourself.

HOWEVER, I did make a special purchase of bike racks. I have several types at several price points. Here's the rundown.

2 Bike trunk rack ($20)
3 Bike trunk rack ($25)
3 Bike 1" hitch mount rack ($40)
3 Bike 1" hitch mount rack (fold down) ($45)
4 Bike 1" or 2" hitch mount rack (fold down) ($60)

The $40 and $45 versions came of police cruisers and are incredibly durable. They'll be at the shop tomorrow. Drop me a line if you want me to put one aside for you.

New from the GBP

As you may have heard, the GBP is expanding. As part of our expantion we will be offering some new products and services, some of which I detailed yesterday. The most exciting of these new products will be a totally recycled bicycle! We're not talking a repaired bike here. We're talking brand spanking new construction, and all for under $30!

We've purchased exclusive blueprints form a European company that manufactures bikes. These bikes are light weight, waterproof, and incredibly easy to make. Even better, as we are building the frames, we can make road bikes, mountain bikes, or even hybrids, all for the same price! This first run should be ready soon and will be very few in number. As such, we will be taking preorders TODAY ONLY. Please email your preferences for bike style, frame size, and color along with your name and contact information by midnight tonight to be added to our list.
