Welcome to the GBP Blog

This is the Blog associated with our main website TheGreenBicycleProject.org

The GBP has merged with Damn Good Bikes LLC. Please visit the new blog for more recent updates.

We are the GBP. Our mission is to keep bikes on the road and thus keep cars off. We call this “Bikecycling”; that’s recycling, but for bikes. The concept is simple. Take a bike that’s no longer wanted, broken, or even bound for a landfill and apply a bit of knowhow and a lot of elbow grease and you get a bike that can last someone for years. These bikecycled bikes are sold at a price that covers only our costs in repairing them so as to provide bicycles at the lowest cost possible. All of our bikes are repaired and tuned by a mechanic so that from the moment you pick them up they are ready to hit the road. Take a look below for our current project bikes and completed rides.

Location:
We are located in the US Storage facility at Capital Circle NE and Mahan Rd. While have moved into our new store, we are in the same complex. To get there follow the road through the complex, around the 90 degree bend and make the first left (at the tree). We'll be the first store front on your right. Sound complex? The best way to find us is to follow the bikes!

Buying our bikes:
Please visit our main website at thegreenbicycleproject.org for information about buying our bikes. You may also email us at Thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com.

Rain, Sleet, Snow or Shine

Tomorrow's weather looks terrible. T-storms with hail and "damaging winds" is forecast. However, I have several people who I promised to be in the shop for so I'll be there. I will only have the yellow bike outside to mark the shop as the truck will be around the corner under an awning and the other bikes will be inside. If the rain gets too bad, I will also mostly close the door to keep the rain out.

See you tomorrow!

Trades and Donations

Hi Green Bikers,

You may have noticed the slowdown in bikes over the last month. I can say with honesty that it's not my fault. It used to be that I could find lots of bikes just by closing my eyes and pointing (I kid you not). The combination of increased competition and market forces has made it harder and harder to find bikes. This brings me to my point, if you have a bike that doesn't fit your needs, you have a friend who has a bike they don't want, or mom and dad have an old bike that's taking up space, bring it in to the shop. Donated bikes help keep costs down and thus lowers the price we can sell them for.

Also keep in mind that we do trade bikes. So if you're looking to upgrade from that heavy mountain bike to a lighter road bike, bring the old one with you. We can certainly work out a trade for at least part of the price of that "new" bike.

SOLD: Schwinn Le Tour ($100)

BUMP!

This bike is a little older and isn't as polished as some, but it's a very comfortable ride. The handlebars have been replaced with mountain bike bars and the seat is a nice and wide gel seat. This is an origional hybrid. The bike is about a 50cm (although it's hard to measure on a bike like this) and is a 10 speed.

The bike is considered "green" as it is priced at only $100.

The bike is available by appointment (email thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com) or on Saturday during normal shop hours (10am-2pm).

The Is have it

With pooling closed and all precincts reporting we know but one thing... we need a recount! I'm just kidding, this is Florida after all. We let the courts decide who/what we vote for.

Anyway, the GBP will be 6 months of free tune ups. However, as with any promotion there are some rules. First, to get 6 months of free tuneups you must purchase your bike from the GBP in MARCH and get a receipt. You must bring your receipt back with your bike for your free tune up. Second, there is a limit of once a month on tuneups (sorry but any bike that needs more than that has other issues). Third, tuneups are defined as a check of break and derailer functionality and the related adjustments. It does not cover parts, repairs (read: instalation of parts or other non-trivial fixes), or replacement of worn or inoperable components. Finally, we must reserve the right to refuse a tune up due to the condition of the bike or other problems. Bikes do not have to be in perfect condition but they must at least be in an operable state for any tuneing to be done.

Sorry about the restrictions. Our crack legal team made us do it. We don't mess with them, they're scary.

Valentine's Day Special

Tomorrow's special is simple. Bring in your sweetie's bikes and get them a free tune up! What better way to get ready for that romantic bike ride (you are taking a romantic bike ride... right?) then to make sure that your special someone's bike is ready to go!

To sweeten the deal, there will also be discounts from 10-50% on all complete bikes! We'll also be selling some msc. items (extra parts, unused storage, even whole bikes!) that are making the shop feel cramped.

See you tomorrow!

March promotions

In honor of the greenest month of the year, next month the GBP will have a special promotion. The problem is we have never done a promotion before so we don't quite know what you would like. Our solution? A Poll! Vote on the right for your favorite promotion!

(PS: We have something else special in the works, but keep it on the DL will ya?)

Green Truck and a new mystery bike!

Hi all. A few of you stopped by the shop today and were witness to the new green truck (it's not my fault that GMC decided to paint it white)! I fronted the project the cash (we were a little short on funds as indicated by the note in the sidebar) as we've been in dire need of more substantial transport for new bikes. It's a sad sad day when we have to pass up great deals on bikes due to a lack of space on a bike rack. Speaking of lack of space, the GBP has a new mystery bike for sale! Come by Saturday and see the new hotness.

How is the GBP different?

Being an economist I know something about how common property works. It doesn't (see: the tragedy of the commons). Projects like the yellow bicycle system and this system in Paris are doomed to failure. The problem is and always will be that each individual acts to maximize their net benefit which means that they seek to get the most out of something while paying as little as possible for it. In the case of common property, there is no or little cost in use and great benefit in certain actions.

Take for example someone who needs to get from one side of a city to another. If they can take a free bicycle to make the trip then the cost is entirely in the effort and time necessary to bike to the destination. If there is no place to return the bicycle at their destination, there is an additional cost of turning in the bike. If there is no punishment for not turning in the bike then why make any effort to do so?

This is one of many reasons common property schemes fail. The GBP avoids the common property problem all together by assigning private property rights (eg: ownership). In doing so, we act to make sure that every bike we repair is taken care of. If you own it and use it then why would you destroy it?

SOLD: Peugeot Carbolite 103 ($175)

This bike is a wonderful old french made road bike. It's a 56/57 cm bike with special rims designed for a generator (also included) and is set up as a 5 speed (but can be made back into a 10 speed). It's in perfect condition with lots of shiny chrome.

The bike is considered "premium" as it is priced at $175.

The bike is available by appointment (email thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com) or on Saturday during normal shop hours (10am-2pm).

SOLD: Benotto Modelo 800 ($150)

Another new small road bike. This bike is a lugged 48cm (perfect for someone about 5") with a Shimano light action derailer set. It's a 10 speed with some very nice wheels.

The bike is considered "premium" as it is priced at $150.

The bike is available by appointment (email thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com) or on Saturday during normal shop hours (10am-2pm).

SOLD: Cannondale Road Bike

This bike is something I NEVER get at the GBP. In fact, if you were looking for me this morning you may have noticed the shop wasn't open till 1pm. This bike was the reason. It's a smaller (I think it's a 45cm but i'm still researching), aluminum, welded frame bike. It's a 10 speed, shift on the frame with a Shimano 105 derailer set. Also included in the price is the clip pedals.

Due to the highend nature of this bike is considered "premium" and is priced at $250.

The bike is available by appointment (email thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com) or on Saturday during normal shop hours (10am-2pm).

Today @ the GBP

If you happen to be planning to visit the shop before noon, don't. I have to make an extended trip to pick up some new merchandise. When i do get there I will have extended hours (open till 5pm). Sorry about the change.
