Welcome to the GBP Blog

This is the Blog associated with our main website TheGreenBicycleProject.org

The GBP has merged with Damn Good Bikes LLC. Please visit the new blog for more recent updates.

We are the GBP. Our mission is to keep bikes on the road and thus keep cars off. We call this “Bikecycling”; that’s recycling, but for bikes. The concept is simple. Take a bike that’s no longer wanted, broken, or even bound for a landfill and apply a bit of knowhow and a lot of elbow grease and you get a bike that can last someone for years. These bikecycled bikes are sold at a price that covers only our costs in repairing them so as to provide bicycles at the lowest cost possible. All of our bikes are repaired and tuned by a mechanic so that from the moment you pick them up they are ready to hit the road. Take a look below for our current project bikes and completed rides.

Location:
We are located in the US Storage facility at Capital Circle NE and Mahan Rd. While have moved into our new store, we are in the same complex. To get there follow the road through the complex, around the 90 degree bend and make the first left (at the tree). We'll be the first store front on your right. Sound complex? The best way to find us is to follow the bikes!

Buying our bikes:
Please visit our main website at thegreenbicycleproject.org for information about buying our bikes. You may also email us at Thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com.

RESPECT

A good link for bicycle advocates and casual bikers alike. The WSJ on R-E-S-P-E-C-T, tell me what it means to me.

Also, the much fabled TREKs are here and better than advertised as both frames come with extra components! We've also added a beautiful Gary Fisher front shock MTB and a sold frame Schwinn to our stock. On the accessory side, we've picked up a shipment of brand new riding gloves ($10, medium and large, blue or black), watter bottles ($4, 24oz, yellow green), micro multi-tools ($5), as well as a few other goodies. All these items will be available on the 11th.

Finally, our garage sale is a GO! We have two confirmed sellers beyond the GBP as well as Ice Cream for sale from D'lites! If you've never had their ice cream, I pity you. The entire GBP staff is hooked on the low cal, soft serve. I'm a sucker for the peanut butter and chocolate myself. In fact, it may become a problem when we decide to cut our hours short to go enjoy some (just kidding, we'd stock up before we open). Did I mention it was low cal and delicious?

For those of you who missed it...

You can't miss the man, but you might have missed the story. Here it is, an interview with Tally's own Speedo Rider!

Trek-A-Thon

If you've been keeping up with GBP news, you may know that we're having a BIG garage sale the second weekend in July. What you may not know is that we'll also have 6 brand new (at least to us) Trek mountain bikes in the shop. Yep, 6 with an "S" and an "X" and likely an "I", but not in that order.

Here's the lowdown, we made a special purchase from a Police department in GA to get 4 of their spare bikes. At least one still says "POLICE!" We should have two of the 4 complete by the 11th and the other two will be frames+. We also have a pair of Trek 4500s (one red and one blue) that'll be hitting the shop floor at the same time. The blue one is ready to go with Rock Shox and carbon fiber handlebars and the other is nearly there.

So that's it, 6 Trek mountain bikes. In fact, you can buy all 6 for less than the cost of 2 new. Put that in your pipe and smoke it LBS!

GBP Garage Sale

When: July 11th, 9am-5pm
Where: GBP Back lot (by the glass doors)
Why: To raise funds for a GBP makeover

What: Items donated by the friends of the GBP including furniture, books, clothes, computer equipment, and of course BIKES!

We're looking for donations of anything appropriate for a garage sale. Please email thegreenbicycleproject@gmail.com to schedule a pickup or drop off of items.

Extreme Makeover GBP Edition

If you've visited the shop in the last few months you may have been a little unimpressed with, well, everything except the bikes. Brown and yellow walls a green bike shop do not make. The reason for leaving it that way was because of just a general lack of time and help. This summer has led to more of both and we've finally gotten our back log of bikes for repair under control. That means it's makeover time! New paint, a better workspace, and fewer obstructions means a better shop experience for you! But we can't do it alone! We need your help and support to get this project done.

Here's what we plan to do:
A full cleaning
Paint over every inch of yellow and brown
Rebuild the workspace
Make and install permanent signage

Here's what we need:
Paint
Artistic skill
Helping hands
A few Msc. pieces of equipment

Some of the things we need will require $$$. Rather than begging for your financial donations (I hate that) we will be holding the first annual GBP Garage Sale (see next post) July 11th. There will be clothes, books, computer equipment, and of course BIKES! Every penny of the sale goes back into renovations to the shop and, if we can earn enough, AC for the shop! If you have some stuff you'd like to donate to the sale or if you would like to help out with any of the projects, send us an email and we can fill you in on the details.

New Bikes and The Much Fabled GBP T-Shirt!

NEWS FLASH: New bikes are posted over at the main site. Be excited.
Other news: THE GBP SHIRT IS BEING PRINTED THIS WEEK! It's been a long hard journey (fine a weekend of shopping) but we've finally reached critical mass for a new GBP shirt! WOOT! There are 3 designs available on many different types of shirts. Here are your choices:

This design features an old school bike with all the important bits explained. NB: Frames, Rims, Forks and the like are not important enough to be noted while the mandatory bike pump is.

This picture will be on the front with the caption "Old School" while "The Green Bicycle Project, Tallahassee FL" will adorn the back along the shoulders.

This design is a stylized silhouette of a woman on a bike. We call her Shela. Shela is a strong woman, so strong in fact that she don't need no stinking bike, or a caption for that matter.

Again, the back will say "The Green Bicycle Project, Tallahassee FL" along the shoulders.

This final image is my favorite. It's the American sign language sign for "Bicycle". Below the image will be "Bicycle (n.): a vehicle with two wheels tandem, handlebars for steering, a saddle seat, and pedals by which it is propelled." The back will yet again say "The Green Bicycle Project, Tallahassee FL" along the shoulders.

We have collected several colors, brands, textures, and sizes of shirts which these will be printed on. As we're doing the printing ourselves, we can also print on the item of clothing of your choice. Here's the initial pricing:
Printed Cotton Shirt: $12
Printed Cotton/Polly Shirt: $15
Printed Sweatshirt/Hoodie: $25
For the first run we will be printing primarily on green shirts with a smattering of purple, orange, and gray. We will be using either black or white ink depending on the shirt. There should be some examples available this weekend with a full run being available sometime in July.

Saturday's ride is CANCELED!

Bad news. The bike ride to St. George for tomorrow and Sunday has been canceled. We will be rescheduling for July. If you have a preference for dates let me know this week. On the bright side, this might give us enough time to make T-shirts!

NEW BIKES POSTED

Just a heads up that there are new bikes posted on the GBP store. They tend toward smaller mountain bikes and BMX at the moment but there is a smattering of everything up there.

Save the Bikes Road Tour 2009

If you've kept up with our blog, you've certainly heard about our big bike ride on the 13th. We will be taking the scenic route from the St. Marks Trailhead all the way to St. George Island State Park. That's about a 160 mile round trip over two days. If you've never gone that far, don't worry. Almost all the trip is on flat ground and we will be breaking the trip into four, forty mile rides. The current plan is to camp out in the primitive "youth camp" in the park and to have a cookout on the beach on Saturday night. The best part is, the entire trip is just $25 including all the park fees, a follow car, and dinner on the beach!

Here's the link.
