Today is a sad day for us at the GBP. Today we officially shut our doors to the world and begin the torturourus task of moving in with our friends at Damn Good Bikes. We at the GBP would like to thank you for your patronage and invite you to visit our new shop Damn Good Bikes at 652 B Capital Circle NE. The new shop will have all the used bikes and accessories of the GBP along with a larger selection of new bikes and accessories. We will of course offer the same service and bad jokes you knew and shuttered over at the old shop.

The GBP is moving on up! We've got a brand new shop and there will be parties and celebrating, and drunken monkeys. Ok, maybe just Bryan with a lampshade on his head, but still fun! To get ready for our move we're having one big sale to clean out our inventory. Because the more we sell the less we have to move! We're talking up to 25% off bikes, all small used accessories are $1, and everything in the back is up for sale. Make an offer, we might just accept!

Buyback Event

It's that time of year again! The GBP is having their Big Buyback Event! If you bought a bike from us or even someone else we'll buy it! Better yet, we'll buy it for 10% more than our usual rate!

Here's how it works:
If you bought your bike from the GBP:
1) Bring it in with your receipt.
2) We'll give you that price minus our $30 cost to keep the shop open*.
3) Then we'll give you 10% more (up to $30)!!!

If you bought a bike somewhere else:
1) Bring it in.
2) We figure out what we can sell it for.
3) We give you that price minus our $45 cost to tune it up and keep the shop open*.
4) Then we give you 10% more (up to $30)!!!

Not bad huh?

*If mechanical flaws are found we also subtract the cost of repair from the buyback price.

Don't let looks decieve you, we have lots of stock! The website has just fallen out of date a little (my bad). We also have a slew of new bikes comming in that will fill in some gaps in our lineup. Besides erratic driving and public drunkenness, spring also means it's time for spring cleaning. Yep. I went there. I'm already in the spirit of things and I want to get you into it too. Free Repair Class

In case you missed that giant news dump I took a week ago (keep your minds out of the gutter for just one moment pls) here's the big news. We're doing the long promised free bicycle repair class. Like last time we'll be walking you through basic repairs on your own bike. We'll cover everything from replacing a tire and tube to adjusting derailers. The class will start at 6pm this Saturday at the shop. The class has limited space and is first come first served and pre-registration is available if you email me (thegreenbicycleproject AT gmail DOT com). As usual, blog readers get first dibs but I'll be posting the class on CL tomorrow so act fast!

Saturday Work Day

I'm no electrician but I'm fairly sure that it's not the best idea to we working on live wires in the middle of shop hours is the best idea. The bad news is that means we have to officially close the shop this Saturday to work on our projects. The good news is that we're installing ceiling fans and more lighting to help make your time at the GBP more enjoyable.

Now, I'm not saying that I'm going to turn you away from the shop this Saturday just don't expect to be able to shop as you usually do. If you absolutely, positively have to come on Saturday, please make an appointment. That way we can avoid the whole electrocution part. Well, try to at least. No promises about Bryan. ;-)

News Dump

A quick update for the end of the month!

First, new bikes are in! We have a pair of smaller name brand bikes in the shop for under $100! We also have the first hybrid of the year and a pair of hybridized mountain bikes. If you haven't been in lately you might also want to know about the several road bikes and a new cruiser bikes that's also on the floor. Thas alotta bikes.

Second, we're having the next free bicycle repair class on Saturday February 20th at 6pm. Registration must be in person at the shop. We've again limited the number of participants to 10 so hurry!

Third, I'm informed that we'll be transitioning the main page to a new server fairly soon. That'll mean a redesign of the site and some new features. There's alos a chance we'll have an integrated blog. I'll let you know what I know more.

Finally, in case you were worried, the fish are doing swell. After some initial problems with fish dying I've managed to stabilize the tank and have even added some new decor! I hope to have the final product done in just a few weeks.

Despite rain in the forecast tomorrow, it seems as if the shop will be buzzing. By last count there will be 4 volunteers in the shop tomorrow which means more bikes on the floor. We already have a woman's Schwinn MTB new on the floor but there's more to come. Beyond the road bikes predicted in a previous post we're also working on a pair of hybrids. If you have a preference, we will be taking requests all day.

Dead fish and Roadbikes

No, the bike mafia isn't closing in (we hope) but there is a problem with the fish tank. We've lost quite a few fish as of late which makes guessing the total number hard. Therefore we're suspending the contest (sorry).

As for road bikes, we've got a lot of new ones! We have bikes from TREK, Schwinn, Cannondale, Murray, and more that will be hitting the floor this week. Prices on road bikes start at $75 for fixers and $125 for ready to ride bikes. If you're in the market for a road bike this semester, now is the time to shop!

Good by 2009, we hardly knew ye! Is it gone? Sweet. Honestly, 2009 was kinda a downer. It really brought down the room; ya know? Fortunately 2010 is looking to be a much better year. The GBP is starting it out right by offering a big contest. We call it THE FISH TANK PROJECT! To start off, we've installed a massive 180 gallon fish tank right in the middle of the shop. It's amazing. There's water, and gravel, and even lights! We've also added fish. A LOT OF FISH. There are so many fish Mike can't count them all. Why is that important? Well, Mike lost the receipt and we paid by the fish. So to find out how much we spent we need your help. Count, estimate or just plain guess how many fish are in the tank and write it on one of the entry blanks located next to the tank. When the next bank statement comes (Feb. 1) we'll match the guess to the billed total. The winner will be the person who comes the closest without going over. What do you win? Well we're giving away a bike of course! As a consolation prize we'll also be giving away $5 gift certificates to who ever guesses second and third closest. Not bad for writing a number on a slip of paper!

The Fish Tank Project...

If you've been in the shop the last few weeks you may have noticed a lonely looking fish tank in a corner. Those of you who know me would find such a sight... well... common. I had intended to use that tank as a bit of a display piece for the GBP. Unfortunately it wasn't working out so I had to let it go. It's replacement is due tomorrow. With it comes a new and... different kind of contest.

New Bikes and New Accessories

We got a big shipment today just in time for Saturday (no post tomorrow). In it we got a whole shipment of brand new adult size Giro helmets ($20) and 24oz Polar water bottles ($8). We also got in two used huffy bicycle with aluminum frames ($60 each). All of this will be on the floor Satuday.

Update: A shipment of comfort seats ($15) came in too.

Bike Frames

Well the much talked about bike frame display has finally moved from myth to reality. The display now holds frames retrieved from the recesses of the shop (read: storage) and we've priced them at the "let me check for change under my seat" price level (read: very low). Make no mistake, these are not cheap frames with brands such as Trek, Fuji, Haro, GT, RD, Schwinn, and Diamondback dominating. The frames are split between mountain bike and road bike and are in good condition. If you're looking to make a build, this is a good place to start.

Our lease for our warehouse is up and we're moving to a smaller space. That means all that organizational stuff we've had sitting in a box for months needs to be put up... ASAP! Winter Road Bikes Are IN!

Before you ask, no, there's no difference between a winter road bike and a summer road bike. Well, besides the price. These bikes have been dissapearing from the shelves all year and now we've got a shipment of 6 road bikes in just in time for the holidays. We have bikes for all sizes, skill levels and price ranges. Here's the skinny:

Trek 1000AL road bike ($450):
Perfect for the serious rider looking for an every day bike or a entry level race bike. The 1000 series is the less expensive version of the 1200 and 1500 series. The cost savings comes from a "suicide" shift system (instead of trigger shifters) and less expensive components. With a 60cm frame it's an ideal size for someone of the 6' persuasion. We've swapped out the stock tires for a nicer Bontrigger model and upgraded the seat to a gel race saddle. We also rewrapped the handlebars with some deluxe foam tape to take some of the edge off. The bike comes with stock flats but you also get your choice of any of our used clip pedals for free.

Fixie Road Bike ($300):
Looking to get out on the road in style? This fixie/single speed features a flip flop rear hub with tension adjuster making it the ideal minimalist transport. Use this puppy to get around campus or bike to work in style. With a flat black finish, the 55cm frame accommodates average sized riders in comfort while allowing the rider's style to show through. We got this bike new in the box so it's super clean and comes with all brand new components.

Huffy Omni 10 ($125):
This is the GBPs least expensive, fully rideable, multi speed road bike in many months. Well, the first one to make it to the floor at least. While she might not be a looker in her 80s fab, she's fast and durable. A 20" frame makes this baby a fit for an average sized rider and the perfect campus transportation.

Sheffield Single Speed RB ($100):
This bike is old school. A red Free Spirit fame has been combined with classic mustache handlebars and a coaster break rear wheel to create a road monster of epic proportions. This bike screams classic while still being practical. Due to the smaller frame and upright position of the rider, this bike will fit any average sized adult.

Classic Raleigh Fixer Upper ($150):
It's red. It's 60cm tall. It's a giant of a road bike. This sucker is next on our list of fixie converts but until then we're offering it to you for 1/2 the price.

Ross Fixer Upper ($75):
She needs some love but all the parts are there to make a great bike. A bit of a smaller women's road bike, this one will make someone a great every day commuter.

We're also constantly getting bikes in. We just got in a 7th road bike today but it hasn't been checked out yet. As soon as it's done we'll post info.

New Bikes...

... are up on the GBP main page. Two things to note. First, not every bike in the shop is up right now (I was in a rush and missed some pictures) but I'll try and finish off the post tomorrow. Second, the online prices may differ from in store prices. You can see the differences in the "sale item" category. We do this to give those of you who use the website a little extra incentive to stop by. But be warned, if you don't mention the price difference in the store you won't get the additional discount!

In other news, we're accumulating a large number of very nice frames. These often sit for weeks or months gathering dust in the back. Not anymore. We will begin displaying some of our more awesome fames out front come this Saturday. If you're in the market for a MTB of RB fame, our used frame department is a good starting point.

Just a heads up to everyone looking for a road bike. We picked up a BEAUTIFUL 60 cm Trek 1000 last night. It's the Aluminum frame version so it's very light weight. It comes with basic areo bars and your choice of pedals. It still needs some work but it should be done this afternoon.

Back in black!

Ok, so we've gotten trough the holiday season in one piece. No more holidays till Valentines. Perfect. What? We still have Christmas and New Years? Blerg. Well, fortunately both are on Fridays which means the GBP will be open! W00T! We'll also be open tomorrow (Saturday) during normal hours.

No structured sale this week but there are about 1/2 a dozen bikes that were nearly done before the break that should be on the floor by day's end. We're also marking down some of the bikes that have been sitting around for a while to try and get some more room for January and the spring semester rush.

Last but not least we have a GBP first. We have a brand new bicycle in the shop. It's a 56cm fixie road bike that came to us new in the box. We'll have it asymbled and ready to ride for just $300 tomorrow. I promise you it won't last the day.

It's been a hectic couple of weeks. First we were closed for Halloween, then Justin got a new day job, we both had midterms and finals eating all our time and now I’ve been sick. I hope you can forgive us if we didn't have a whole lot of time for the shop. The good news is that the shop is not dead and even though we've been silent on the interwebs we've been keeping our stock up in the shop. Here's what's new and a taste of what's still there!

October 23rd Chain Links

This post marks 160 posts on the blog! Frankly, I never though the blog would last this long (several others died around 2 posts) but so many people read it (or say they do) that it's hard to stop. Speaking of hard to stop, here's three links to trends that will be very hard to stop in the next few years.

First: I chronicle bike thefts often because I believe that as bike usage grows theft will also grow (something about supply and demand). This city has the same problem as many others, but unlike others it acknowledges the problem and is working to solve it.

Second: China has had such a great track record for biking that this news is surprising. However, the pervasiveness of bikes might make China suffer from the reverse problem of most cities. Too many bikes.

Finally: I'm not a fan of critical mass. Civil disobedience is a useful tool to affect policy change but the idea of putting people in harm's way to make a protest is not civil disobedience, it's criminal.

Bonus: 10 cities just made for biking.

Today's links may not be as globetrotting as usual but they do span the world of green bike gadgets. From reducing pollution, to reusing the number of gadgets, to recycling used parts, today's links make even the most environmentally friendly rider look bad. I'll even throw in a bonus link about how eating right and tasting good don't need to be independent concepts.

First: For the lazy among us, here's an alternative to the gas and electric bikes we've heard so much about.

Second: If you have an Iphone (or any other GPS phone) at one point or another you've contemplated playing with it while on a ride. Here's a way to hold it and a way to charge it both whole staying safe.

Third: Build it and they will come (on bikes).

Bonus: It has nothing to do with bikes but it's a good read about one man trying to make middle America healthy.

New Extended Hours

By popular demand we have added another day to our roster of open days. We will now be open Wednesdays from 10am-2pm (sound familiar?). While Wednesdays will never have as big a selection of bikes as Saturdays it will have the major advantage of having two mechanics on duty. That means your repairs will get done even faster. Repairs dropped off any time on Saturday can now be picked up on Wednesday or the following Saturday (repairs dropped off before 2 can still usually be picked up on Saturday).

Back to basics

You may have noticed a few aesthetic changed to the blog and home page. I know people fear change (cue the torch wielding mob) but this one is major only in your head. All we've done is made the blog and homepage look better (and more similar) so that we can finish the website upgrades. Yep, we're finally adding the blog to the homepage (hopefully). It won't change how you see the blog or your feeds, all we're doing is making so that that pesky page that redirects here doesn't need to redirect. That, and protecting ourselves from ninjas by cloaking our website in a veil of darkness. You can never be too safe.

I'm exhausted from a long weekend of bikes and it looks like I'm not the only one. Here's 5 fun and sometimes funny stories about bike from the webosphere. Our subjects for today are philosophy, criminal justice, political science, art and design, and common sense.

First: Let us expound on the philosophy of the bicycle as it related to the automated human conveyance.

Second: No more campaign promises. All I ask is more taxes to fund more bike lanes.

Third: Art is in the design and flow of both humanity and their creations. Not only does the butterfly flap it's wings but so to does the air to hold the flier aloft.

Fourth: We all know from last class that your best method for catching a crook is the follow the evidence. In this case the evidence leads to several arrests.

Finally: If duct tape can be torn by hand, it is likely not the best method of securing your valuables.

Odds and ends

A few updates for the masses.

First, we kicking off a weekly email (Wednesdays or Thursdays) that will update those on the list with all of the GBP's upcoming events including sales, promotions, events, and classes. The email will also contain a list of our known new bikes (eg: the ones we've finished fixing since we opened the Saturday before) and some of the project bikes we expect to finish soon. Think of it as a more formalized version of the blog.

Second, we now have a new bigger warehouse (WOOT!)! That means that we have more space to store all those funky and, frankly, disturbing creatures we call "in progress" bikes. The extra space allows us to be more productive (hopefully) and it certainly allows us to store more stuff. The "more stuff" also means we can again offer a service which I missed, the used spare parts exchange. Currently we only offer accessories (seats, pedals, waterbottle cages, etc.) but starting in the near future we will have a list of used parts available for sale. The prices for these parts will range from $1-$5. Alternatively, you can always buy a parts bike for $10 and pull anything you want. Check the shop for details.

Third, we took in almost 30 bikes this weekend with about 1/2 being brand name mountain bikes. We also got in a pair of road bikes, a cruiser, and two hybrids. Here's a partial list (whit i remember) of what came in.

Welcome to October! To celebrate here's 6 links to bicycle news stories we at the GBP found "interesting." Feel free to interpret interesting however you like but bike theft and recovery in Dublin, No need for bells in Tampa, Counting bikes in the NW, Making money in Missouri, and a crazy guy in LA topped my list of interesting today.

First: We linked to a story a few weeks back about Dublin having bike rentals and them not being stolen. Woops, guess reality caught up with them. Then reality caught up with the thieves.

Second: Ding dong the bell law is dead! (See what I did there, I'm so clever! Please, no more rotten tomatoes.)

First off I'd like to welcome all of our friends from China who are now tuning in and commenting. Those posts about "penis enlarging" were riveting. Thanks. Aside from reading those (google translate or a working knowledge of Chinese required) I also have some links for you all to enjoy. Bikes get stolen all the time. Not only is a stolen bike a loss of property, in many cases it's a loss of transportation. We at the GBP care deeply not only about bike theft prevention but keeping people on bikes and out of cars. To do our part we will be giving away a free On Guard "Double Team" bike lock with every bike purchase over $200!

These locks sold for $25 in shop ($30+ online) and are brand spanking new. This is the only (new) bike lock we sell because we've found it to be the only lock to be both difficult to break/pick and cost effective. This U-lock features a pick resistant locking mechanism mounted in the middle of the barrel (making the mechanism pry resistant also) and a hardened steel loop. It also comes with a braided steel cable to secure your wheels. Best of all, it looks beefy.

If you can't afford a $200 bike, we still want to help secure your bike. We've therefore dropped the price of the lock to $20 flat.

Not bad huh? Not enough? Fine! We will be offering a free basic bike repair class at 5pm on Saturday. Registration is required as we can only accommodate 10 per class. To register, email thegreenbicycleproject AT gmail DOT com stating your intent to join the class (and your name of course). This class is first come first served and I will be notifying those who get a spot via email.

Looking forward to a Monday 3peat? Howbout a Monday 5spot to brighten the start of a long week? Just for fun, we'll cover not just Florida but the globe today. We've got bicycles on the brain in Dublin, cars boxing out bikes in Taipei, restored bicycle in India, bike lockers in Idaho, and drunk fashion designers in NYC (I think).

First: Meet 1/2 my inbox. Dublin is making a thousand rides available to the public. It's not free but as long as you bike fast and happen to be going somewhere near a terminal it can't be too bad. Apparently 2000 took advantage and no-one broke anything.

Second: How do you spend $3 million an a bike lane then let Taxis park in it? I don't know, but China seems to be doing a good job of it in Taipei.

Third: This scheme sounds familiar. The only drawback I see is traveling 120km each way to transport every bike to be fixed.

Fourth: I'd like to call on all Tallahassee city council members to vote to fund something like this. Failing that, we might want to consider funding a secure bike parking area with shower facilities downtown. Just a thought.

New Bikes on THEGBP.ORG

Someone came by the shop today and mentioned how out of date the website is. Well, they're right. I spent the last hour making updates to the website, most notably the stock. I've put up many of the bikes we have in the shop (some I still need to take pictures of) and have removed the bikes that sold. Yes I know, this should have been done last week. I figured it was more important to have stock in the shop.

If you see something you want, let me know. I should be in the shop clearing out a brand new backlog on Wednesday. If I know you're coming I'll make sure I'm there and the door's open.

New Stuff Roundup!

It's been a busy week. We have some nice shiny new merch in the shop as well as some other stuff. We finally got our shipment of bike locks! These are OnGaurd "Double Team" U-locks that have a pick resistant center locking mechanism and are constructed to resist everything short of the jaws of life. They also some with a secondary cable to lock up your expensive wheels!
Also in the shipment are a few new bike jerseys (in men's large!). These will all hit the floor in time for Saturday.

We also got in a few new bikes. We lost count around 40 but I'd estimate north of 50 bikes in the lot. Before you get too excited, many of these bikes will never hit the "showroom" as they are too beat up to be repaired. However, we've so far pulled a GT MTB and a Haro MTB that should see light late this Saturday or at opening next week. No pricing yet, sorry.

Also over the last several days I've been in and out of the shop prepping for the influx of bikes. I've gone through the back stock and pulled several frames that might be of interest. Now on display are a pair of Trek MTB frames as well as 3 RB frames. There are at least 2 more in back waiting for a little tlc before they hit the floor. All of the frames are priced at or below $100 with the majority at or below $60.

There are also several new (or just finished) high end bikes that I've added to the floor. There's a GT Outpost Trail that's got a $175 price on it and a Trek Police Bike with a $600 tag. Both are used but in good condition. The best bike bar none on the floor now is a BRAND SPANKING NEW Gary Fisher Marlin priced at $450 (retail is just south of $800). This bike is on consignment which means I don't have pricing power (so don't ask).

Other than that we have a good assortment of bikes priced from $30 as well as lots of used merch. and brand new merch. If you're looking for a bike or something for your bike, make sure to stop in. We might just have it and we might just save you a bundle.

New Policy

Just to give you all a heads up. Due to the rash of bike thefts on campus (sorry, FSU PD doesn't have details yet) we're instituting new bike buying and trade in requirements. First, we can not buy or take a trade on a bike who's serial number has been removed or damaged. Second, we must require a photo-ID (Driver's License) for all trades and sales (if you buy a bike from he GBP you don't need one). Finally, everyone who sells us a bike or trades one in must sign a statement affirming that the bike is theirs to sell and was lawfully purchased.

We will also be sending descriptions and serial numbers of all bikes we deal with to both FSUPD and Tallahassee PD. Bike theft is a horrible crime who's victims are often discounted while many of the perpetrators get off scott free. We've instituted this policy both for your protection and ours so please help us try and stop bike theft at all levels.

First: Make bike thieves your b*tch. Follow the three steps that the examiner recommends and and make any potential thief look like an idiot. First, use a good lock. Second, don't go for that shiny new bike and think it won't be a target. Third, register your bike. All good advice.

Second: Did you know that the legal BAC for riding a bike and driving a car are identical in Florida? Bet you didn't! It doesn't happen too often but you can get a DUI for riding your bike!

Third: We heard about these folks a few weeks ago. Now they've made it to South Carolina and are still going strong. You can track their progress here.

BMX Blowout!

We have soooooo many BMX bikes. By last count 7 billion (my counting skills may be a bit rusty though). We have everything from high end Schwinn to Next bikes all with two things in common, they're BMX bikes and they're $40. Because we're selling so many of these bikes at a REDICULIOUSLY LOW PRICE not all bikes will be available when we open. We'll stagger them throught the day so that people showing up late will have a chance too. If you're looking for cheap transport or something to jump, Saturday's your lucky day!

Today's theme for chain links is "Fish". No reason, I just like fish. It doesn't even relate to today's links. Airbags, banks with brains, civil disobedience, and a fight over a coastal road and not one mentions a fish.

First: Let's get this straight. We wear helmets to protect our heads while biking but car drivers don't need special equipment? That's just not fair! Well, to make things a little more equal (you'll still need a helmet) one company is trying bicycle airbags!

Instead: Might we try just riding on safer roads? 3 feet of clearance is all these riders ask. They'll even fight for it.

Surprisingly: Even with the dangers of biking in the big city, some people are still looking to go green. To help, the notoriously slow thinking banking industry is helping people buy bikes.

Hilarious: I recommend listening to "flight of the Valkyries" while reading this story.

New Bikes and No Chain Links

Sorry about the no chain links. There just isn't enough time or cool news today. As for new bikes we have several. Here's a partial list:

There's also a blue cruiser and a $50 bike in the back that may be done by the time we open. We're also looking at buying a large lot of bikes. I'll keep you updated with what's hidden within.

August Contest OVER!

So today marks the end of our August Contest. 8/10 keys were returned and $40 in gift certificates were handed out. The bad news is that no one won the bike. We hid the winning key in "Gun Range" which is along one of the more technical portions of the Tom Brown bike path. One of the people who returned a key reported that the cache was "keyless" two weekends ago so i'm guessing someone picked it up and forgot about it. So today's barrage of work has been less than usual and interesting bike links have been piling up all day. Here's a quick rundown of five most spectacular. If this were Jeopardy and the category was "Bikes and related awesomeness" the questions would be a Bicycle Band from this Country for 200, a Careless Driver causes this % of Deaths for 400, a City with a Late Night Ride for 600, a City with a New Stoplight Actuator for 800, and a Man with a Awesome Bike Collection for 1000. I expect $3000 by the end of the category and you should too if you read the links.

First: Make way for the greatest band on two wheels! Careful not to trip over the accents.

Second: Blame not the bicycle nor the rider, blame the idiot driving the car. To ride a bike you need to be a little bit more aware than if you were driving a car.

Third: We need one in T-Classy. Anyone up for a midnight ride? No? How about 8:04pm?

Fourth: I wish big brother bought me one of these for my stimulus day. :(

Because i'm going to be working my butt off tomorrow, here's a double dose of chain links. Today's theme is "Police programs, the good, the bad, and the ugly." I offer you four stories (two from my former home in Cleveland) about what police are trying to do to protect bicycle riders. Also submitted for your entertainment is a pair of links with bike porn. Mmmmmm... bike porn...

First: The Good! Here's a pair of links separated by half a planet. Cleveland PD is selling (and in many cases giving away) bicycle ID stickers. It's a good idea but the Israelis have a better one. Use the unique serial number on each bike (which is much harder to remove than a sticker) as bike DNA.

Second: The Bad! Not all not-for-profit bike shops are good for the community. This one in Colorado has created enough trouble that it's on the FBI's terror watch list!

Third: The Ugly! Only in Beachwood would such a stupid idea be implemented.

Fourth: We usually recycle our broken bike parts. I guess this could be alternative. Just don't store it in your bedroom if you need to sleep any time soon.

Thank god it's hump day. To help you get over that last bit of the hump here are three articles arranged in order of length (shortest to longest) covering subjects from bicycle insurance to sweat to fancy rides made of bamboo.

First: In a incy wincy tiny pokadot letter to the editor, citizen Richard Wingfield makes three good points. Bikers don't pay for sh*t, Bikers have fewer safety laws than cars, and they don't have to carry insurance. But at least some bikers have realized that they look hotter in helmets.

Second: Tired of pit stains? Want to commute but can't bring yourself to ride that fixie in a suit? Well, tough nookies. The bad news is you're doomed. The good news is that Cool Green Science has some tips for not being so gross at work after a hot bike commute.

Volunteers and More hours

We've had many, many requests for us to be open more hours and while I'd love to be able to do so, there just aren't enough hours in the day for me to both add inventory, repair bikes, and work the sales floor. I'm only one man. Fortunately we have several volunteers who routinely help out. Justin, Lauren, Brian, Austin and Christine have been a godsend and without their help the project would have died an ugly death. However, most of us volunteers have full time jobs or school (or both) to deal with which makes opening the shop on weekdays troublesome. This is where we need your help. For us to be able to be open more we need more volunteers! Specifically, we need someone who can commit to one day a week (preferably Wednesdays) that they can spend in the shop. No experience is necessary but you must be willing to learn.

Here is a list of general activities a volunteer might be expected to fulfill:

1) Outreach: Put up fliers, attend sustainability/green events, coordinate events. This is a job for anyone who is passionate about reducing greenhouse gasses and has available time in spurts. This position involves putting up fliers near where bikers are, representing the GBP at green or sustainability events around town and helping to coordinate events like Save the Bikes.

2) Sales: Bike and accessories sales and cash register. This requires basic knowledge of bike mechanics and riding as well as a cheerful demeanor and a willingness to answer sometimes repetitive questions.

3) Mechanic: Repairing bikes that are not yet ready to ride. This requires the most training/skill but also produces the most benefits. Qualified mechanics can actually keep some of the revenue that their repairs generate in bike sales.

4) Buyer: Tracking bike leads and making purchases. This may be the most fun job (at least I think so) but also comes with the most responsibility. This position requires that you go out into the community to acquire the bikes that we repair. Mostly this consists of Garage Sales and auctions (as donations and trades tend to come to us) but also may entail attending FSU functions and flea markets.

You should volunteer if you...

-have a passion for reducing green house gas emissions one bike at a time

-want to learn how to repair bikes

-want to interact with people in the biking community

-love making a difference in people's lives

You should not volunteer if you...

-expect to make a lot of money

-are in it for the women/men

-want a free bike (try Krank-it-up)

-drank the koolaid

What are the perks?

Most of the perks come from knowing you're helping a project that makes life in Tallahassee better by reducing pollution and making the population fitter. All volunteers will also receive a GBP T-shirt and open access to shop resources. We also have food (sometimes) and drinks for volunteers working in the shop. Nothing overly special but it's our way of saying thanks for helping.

You all know how much I like a running theme. Today's theme is "Bicycle Safety" or "How not to be an idiot on a bike". Three stories from the depths of the interwebs on everything from helmets, to wrong way riders, to getting your bike free upgrades!

First: You should always ride a bike with a helmet. Always. In fact, if you don't ride with a helmet I probably won't ride a bike with you. Be warned.

Second: There are times when riding the wrong way, on sidewalks, or with a shotgun is a good idea. The examiner looks at two of these times and unfortunately ignores the third. Honestly, I'm still looking for a reason to do the third. Ideas?

Finally: I should send this article to all my friends and family just to prove that keeping receipts is a worthwhile endeavor. Hey, it may get you a free bike upgrade!

Accessories and the problems they cause

Soooooooooo, yea. We just purchased a ton of brand new accessories for the shop (sorry no locks this time). Our wholesaler has been on this price increasing kick lately so these may be as inexpensive as we see for a while. Fear not! For we always have used accessories in stock!

Sorry about the outage last week. School eats your life even before it starts. To appease the bicycle gods, today's chain links is expanded with an EXTRA LINK! Today we cover everything from banks getting into the bike charity drives, to bike cop vs. bike rider, to bike racks, and back again. It's been a long and tiring Monday and all I can do is hope these links brighten your day as much as they did mine.

First: Bike laws vary from state to state but the general rule of thumb is "when in Rome do as the Romans do." I think that's even etched into the back of most bicycle helmets. In this case, when riding on the road, obey the same laws you'd have to obey if you were driving a car.

Second: Lesson learned: Bikes that go to the landfill are a tragedy. Bikes that go to a non-profit that fixes them up for reuse are AWESOME!

Third: I may be able to ride my bike with no handlebars, but I can't ride with no rack. Treehugger profiles some of the more... er... interesting racks out there.

Finally: News flash! Man likes his bike! More at 11. Honestly, just the title made me LOL. Talk about fluff.

Keeping with our long running theme of complete discontinuity today I present you with three stories that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER. A bicycle built for 7, a cyber stalker, and an indie film festival are all found below. Enjoy!

First: You've heard the classic term "a bicycle built for two" but how about "a bicycle built for 7?" Called a conference bike, this three wheeled, 7 seater not only looks big, it will also carry a load of over 1400 lbs! For reference, that's .63 metric tons or more than most compact cars can handle. That's good, because it's price tag of $12,750 is more than a lot of compacts too.

Second: I wish I had known about the Bicycle Film Festival when i was living in NY and was close enough to go see it. However, as I'm now in Florida (shucks) I'll have to settle for the shorts of some of the films on YouTube.

Finally: Facebook stalking is not a crime (well, sometimes), especially when it thwarts a would be bike thief from getting away with his crime. Internet savvy mothers take note, you too can be Nancy Drew... on Facebook!

Today we meander from the comfy confines of the environmentalist's approach to bike commuting, to strange state laws, to just plain free stuff. I promised to give you links, not be coherent about it.

First: Sometimes environmentalists get it wrong (I'm looking at you green peace) and sometimes they get it right. My favorite environmental blog, Cool Green Science, has a post up this morning about commuting to work. The author hits all the important parts but saves the helmet till the end!

Second: States make funny laws. Generally they're only known about to a handful of people responsible for enforcing them, but this one from Wisconsin seems important to know for every driver and biker alike.

Finally: Looking for a new bike? Have no cash? Well, you've got better than a 1/1,000,000,000 chance of winning a brand new cyclocross bike from Redline. All you have to do is enter!

Weekend Chain Links

Not every one's perfect. Here's the links I missed while I was doing other things this weekend.

First: Q: When is a paddle boat not a paddle boat? A: When it's a bike! I get the distinct feeling that China is quickly catching up to the US in the all important "too much time on their hands" category.

Second: We have two tandems in the shop at the moment. Unfortunately that wouldn't be enough for this family of 5. They're taking an almost 3 year long bike ride from Kentucky to Alaska (via Florida and Arizona no less) on a quint! That takes balls... or too much time on their hands... USA BACK IN THE LEAD!

Finally: Bike inflation in the us has become rampant, particularly in Portland. Freakonomics takes a look at how the price of bikes relates to the price of cars in several major cities. While I haven't collected data on Tally, my bet is that bikeflation is happening here too.

Sneek preview of coming attractions! We got a HUGE donation of BMX bikes last week. While we haven't had a chance to play with them yet, we will be doing so Wednesday during some special work hours. Justin and I will be rearranging things a bit and hopefully getting a few of them ready to ride. Here's a rundown of the bikes in the shop off the top of my head.

With the fall semester just a weeks away, today's chain links focuses on choosing new bikes. If you're relatively new to biking the links below can help. However before you buy anything, make sure to do your research. A local not-for-profit bike shop is a great place to start!

First: The Dothan Eagle takes a stab at helping out those in need of a new bike. While we can't fault them for trying, the helmet should be mentioned sometime BEFORE the last sentence.

Second: The Buffalo Examiner (that still exists?) has a list of questions to consider before making your purchase. And before you ask, riding a bike will not give you chronic 80's hair like the woman in the picture at the beginning of the article. No promises about THIS hair though. Stache not included.

Third: Wired has a review of a sweet bicycle from Swobo. Note the non-flip-flop hub. If I had $1000 I was going to throw away I'd so buy this bike!

With school starting hundreds of bicycle riding teens and 20 somethings are descending on the capital city. What does this mean? More bikes to steal! While FSU students are providing more opportunities for thieves, Drexel students can feel a little safer. If you're a potential thief and use the Internet to improve your stealing abilities I'd recommend avoiding wikihow.

First: Bike theft affects us all. Whether it's our bike or someone we know, all who bike have a story ends with a bike that's gone forever. Well, students at Drexel University can rest a little easier knowing that at least one thief has been caught.

Second: Thieves in the know use a pen cap to crack most Kriptonite locks. Thieves trying to learn might use a trick they learned from wikihow. Let's just say that if you see someone lugging a car jack toward a bike rack you might want to call the cops. (NB: They're still looking for someone to explain how to "pick a bike lock.")

Finally: I love bike cops as much as the next person, but I still find this article hilarious. My favorite line "Among the tips they've picked up: your chin strap can choke you in a fight, it's not good etiquette to ditch your bike in front of your partner and it's important to stay in shape — if you arrive at the crime scene out of breath, you're not much use." This is what they came all the way from Canada to hear?

This Friday from 6-9pm we're having a party! Yes folks it's that time. We've sold, given away, and even forced them upon our unsuspecting friends, family, and even customers but we're not quite done. There are 30 bikes left that have gone unclaimed and now are doomed to the recycler.

Fear not, they will live on in everything from baseball bats to buildings to even other bikes. Some of them will even wind up in (I'm sorry to say) cars. However, every pound we recycle is one less pound we have to dig out of the ground.

Before they can be recycled, we will endeavor to reduce and reuse every bit possible. To do so we must pull all the usable parts and separate out the non-metal pieces for specialized recycling. This requires disassembling of all 30 bikes! EG: THE FUN PART! If you have no clue how a bike works, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn without worrying about breaking something!

This Friday from 6-9pm (and every Friday till we're done) we will be stripping these bikes down to bare frames. We'll be cranking the music and rocking out while stripping down (the bikes). Pizza and soda will be provided.

Going to Montreal, London, or Boston? Don't worry about renting a car. Those three cities provide free (for 30 min) bikes for anyone with a credit card to use! However, if you're going to Portland you may want to bring cash or check to pay for your bike permit. No money to spend on bikes? If you're down on the gulf coast make sure to bring plenty of gator spray!

First: Several weeks ago I linked to the Bixi project in Montreal. The idea was to have dozens of self sufficient checkout stations for renting bikes. Well, the idea worked so well that Boston and London have signed up! Expect 10,000 Bixis roaming the streets of London in the next few years (Boston is still negotiating).

Second: Portland has always been on the bleeding edge of bike awareness. Now they're redoing their bicycle master plan for 2030 (it's never too early to be thinking about bike advocacy!). BikePortland is doing a multi part series on the project. (Via BikePortland)

We have a new feature here at the GBP Blog. We call it "chain links." In this section we'll be posting links to fun or interesting bike stories around the world. All the links will be SFW (unless noted) so make sure to click through to get all the tidbits the bike world has to offer.

First, what do you do when you're a nature lover, bike lover, and unemployed? How about ride 4000 miles to raise money for the Nature Conservancy? Nathan Winters is doing just that, and of course blogging, twittering and uploading to youtube along the way. (Via Cool Green Science)

Second, while Nathan's motives may be true, cockeyed.com took a slightly less altruistic approach to Google's "Chad Bikes America" trip back in 2001. The outcome is amusing (to say the least) and NSFW if your boss frowns on sporadic laughing fits.

Finally, Clean Technica has a gadget designed for those of us who can't live without our Iphone or crackberry. (My Iphone is currently sitting forlornly looking out the window hoping for even the merest signal. I'm not a fan of my Faraday Cage of an office.) The only drawback is it takes 2 hours to fully charge (if you call 2 hours on a bike a "drawback"). (Via Clean Technica)
